STERLING VILLAGE AND REMEMBERING FORWARD JOIN WORLDWIDE YOUTH SERVICE MOVEMENT

21st Global Youth Service Day Mobilizes Youth Around the World

to Effect Community Change

PISCATAWAY, NEW JERSEY – (4/23/2010) – REMEMBERING FORWARD, an intergenerational creative arts program, will mobilize more than 10 young women and 10 senior women to participate in the 21st Global Youth Service Day on Friday, April 23, 2010 in Piscataway New Jersey. Millions of children and youth in the United States and in more than 100 countries are planning service and service-learning projects that highlight the positive contributions young people make throughout the year.

Remembering Forward is a program that creates, celebrates and strengthens an intergenerational community of women in Piscataway New Jersey. A seven week pilot program that ran from March 24th to May 5th 2009, Remembering Forward partnered diverse young women ages 14 to 22 with residents at the Francis E. Parker Memorial Home in Piscataway. This year, Remembering Forward is doing a one-day service learning activity at Sterling Village. Seniors from Sterling Village will paint “Partner Portraits” with Piscataway students to facilitate conversations about identity and the Piscataway community.

The program is run independently by NYU alumnus Sadia Kalam, who was inspired to work with the aging because of her grandmothers. “There is so much I learned from talking to my grandmothers, especially about women’s history,” she said. “I wanted other girls to have that opportunity as well.” She started the project by applying to grants from nonprofit organizations, like Youth Service America, and she plans to develop the program as she begins graduate school in September.

“The rising momentum of the youth service movement is a shining example of the positive change that stems from young people contributing to their communities,” said Steve Culbertson, president and CEO of Youth Service America. “Global Youth Service Day is a powerful glimpse into the year-round participation of young volunteers. It is also an opportune time to connect children and youth who have never served with local projects that will inspire them to lead a life of service.”

For more information about local events or to get involved, please contact: Sadia Kalam, 732-272-2714 or Maureen Halloran at Sterling Village at 732-699-0033. To RSVP for this Friday email rememberingforward@gmail.com
